Sometimes the truth hurts. In our experience, truth also carries the day and builds trust, even if it is somewhat painful. People tell us they would much rather get honest feedback in a timely manner than sugar-coated feedback or no feedback at all. Being truthful goes in both directions. We’ve seen many leaders build trust by truthfully admitting they made a mistake or missed an important deliverable. Leaders need truthful feedback. Many a CEO has shared with us their desire for more truthful feedback, which makes them feel isolated and “lonely at the top.”
